Seventeen samples from paintings by the distinguished19th century Portuguese painter, Henrique Pousão, werecharacterized by micro-X-ray diffractometry and infraredand Raman microspectroscopy. The main advantages andlimitations of each technique for pigment identification areoutlined, revealing the need for the use of complementarytechniques. Pousão's palette is discussed.
