n-Butenes have been oligomerized at temperatures lowerthan 450 K in the liquid phase overH-mordenite in a continuously stirred tank reactor. Thecomposition and molecular weight ofthe products are very dependent on reaction temperature. Productsare essentially dimers, trimers, and tetramers. The complex reactions were modeled bytaking into account only thetype of carbonium ion; the initial rates showed that theoligomerization reactions followed aRideal mechanism. The dimerization rate constants of butenes andoligomers decrease withincreasing number of carbon atoms of the olefins, while the adsorptionconstants increase withthe hydrocarbon chain length. A model for the conversion ofbutenes to liquid products overH-mordenite is proposed. This model fits the experimental datarather well, although somesimplifying approximations were made to describe these complexreactions.
