Development of Magnetic Silica Hybrid Material with P507 for Rare Earth Adsorption

A magnetic silica hybrid material (MSHM) containing 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-(2-ethylhexyl) ester (P507) for rare earth adsorption was developed. Compared with a common grafting preparation method of magnetic silica hybrid material, the developed strategy of embedding the extractant using a sol–gel method revealed simple and efficient advantages. The prepared hybrid materials were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, magnetization, energy dispersive spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis. As for the adsorption kinetics, the pseudo-second-order equation fitted well the experimental data. Adsorption of Y(III) using the MSHM fit well with the Langmuir isotherm model rather than the Freundlich isotherm model. The values of thermodynamic parameters at 303 K, 311 K, 318 K, and 333 K were calculated. Hydrochloric acid solution was used for the desorption of Y(III) loaded on MSHM. The effective separation of Y(III) and Eu(III) revealed its potential for phosphor recycling.
