A total of 41 Alternaria isolates was recovered from diseased muskmelon leaves with foliar disease symptoms, which were collected from Beijing municipality of China. Thirty-one isolates were identified as Alternaria tenuissima and 10 isolates as A. alternata based on morphological traits, ITS and histone 3 nucleotide sequences. The Alternaria isolates induced the original symptoms including chlorosis and brown lesions on detached muskmelon leaves, with disease incidence ranging from 33.3 to 87.5 %. No significant differences in disease index were detected between the two species. This is the first report of A. tenuissima causing foliar diseases on muskmelon plants in Beijing.
