Dzhuluite, Ca3SbSnFe3+3O12, a new bitikleite-group garnet from the Upper Chegem Caldera, Northern Caucasus, Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia

Dzhuluite, Ca<sub>3sub>SbSnFe<sup>3+sup><sub>3sub>O<sub>12sub> (Iad, a = 12.536(3) Å, V = 1970.05(9) Å <sup>3sup>, Z = 8), a new antimony garnet of the bitikleite-group, was discovered in a kumtyubeite zone in close proximity to the contact with unaltered ignimbrite in a skarn xenolith from the Upper Chegem Caldera, Northern Caucasus, Russia. The empirical formula of the holotype dzhuluite is (Ca<sub>2.954sub>Fe<sup>2+sup><sub>0.043sub>Mg<sub>0.003sub>)<sub>∑3.000sub> (Sn<sub>0.850sub>Sb<sup>5+sup><sub>0.764sub>Zr<sub>0.121sub>U<sup>6+sup><sub>0.127sub>Ti<sup>4+sup><sub>0.070sub>Sc<sub>0.009sub>Nb<sup>5+sup><sub>0.058sub>Hf<sub>0.001sub>)<sub>∑2.001sub>(Fe<sup>3+sup><sub>2.051sub>Al<sub>0.653sub>Fe<sup>2+sup><sub>0.182sub> Ti<sup>4+sup><sub>0.087sub>Si<sub>0.028sub>)<sub>∑3.001sub>O<sub>12sub>. Associated minerals are kumtyubeite, cuspidine, fluorchegemite, larnite, fluorite, wadalite, rondorfite, hydroxylellestadite, perovskite, lakargiite, kerimasite, elbrusite, srebrodolskite, bultfonteinite, ettringite group minerals, hillebrandite, afwillite, tobermorite-like minerals, hydrocalumite and hydrogrossular. Dzhuluite forms poikilitic crystals <50 μm in size that are light-yellow to dark-brown and with a creamy streak. The lustre is strongly vitreous. The calculated density of dzhuluite ranges from 4.708 to 4.750 g/cm<sup>3sup>. Raman spectra are analogous to those of kimzeyite, kerimasite and other bitikleite-group minerals. Dzhuluite formed at high temperature during a retrograde stage of primary rock alteration in the larnite subfacies (sanidinite facies) as a result of fluorine metasomatism.
