The current study has three aims. The first aim is to use exploratory spatial data analysis to identify new research hypotheses about of the evolution of global and local clustering of manufacturings share of total regional employment and regional specialization in manufacturing employment within Indiana, during the period 1950-2000. The study period covers three important forces that have shaped the level and change of the uneven geographical distribution of Indiana manufacturing employment: the growth of Fordism 1950-1970),the decline of Fordism in Indiana and the industrial Midwest during the 1970s and the 1980s and rapid globalization 1990-2000). The second aim is to apply two information-theoretic shift-share models to a comparative analysis of sources of change in the geographical concentration of manufacturing employment in Indiana, during the period from 1950 to 2000. The third aim is to develop an information theoretic shift-share model of an open space economy for the analysis of the role played by global economic expansion or contraction or regional international competitiveness in contributing to overall change in geographical concentration of manufacturing in Indiana. I use the hypotheses derived from ESDA and theories of regional economic cluster formation and geographical dispersion of manufacturing employment to guide the information-theoretic shift-share analysis of changes in the geographical concentration of manufacturing employment in Indiana. Information-theoretic shift-share analysis reveals the following results. First, geographical concentration of manufacturing employment within Indiana decreased before rapid globalization and then increased afterwards. Secondly, the primary contributors to postwar geographical deconcentration of manufacturing employment within Indiana were metropolitan competitive losses and nonmetropolitan competitive gains,as predicted respectively by the theory of agglomeration diseconomies and the product life cycle model. Thirdly, the contributions of county disparities in competitiveness to the rise in geographical concentration of manufacturing employment within Indiana during new globalization were in line with the predictions of the Heckscher-Ohlin model.
