Ganodermataceae(Polyporales,Basidiomycetes)-Current status of knowledge of prized medicinal mushrooms in Asia

Members of family Ganodermataceae have been widely used as traditional medicines particularly in China,Korea and Japan over two millennia to improve longevity and health.Its species are widely researched,because of their highly prized medicinal value.They contain manychemical constituents such aspolysaccharides,steroids and triterpenes as the major groups.They possess an enormous structural and chemical diversity which lead to potential nutritional and therapeutic values.However,it is debatable whether this fungus is a food supplement for health maintenance or is a therapeutic drug for medical purposes.This mushroom usually found in subtropical and tropical regions since it can survive under hot and humid conditions.Furthermore,species in the genera of this familylie in a taxonomic confusion concerning the status of species,whose identification and circumscriptions are unclear since they hold a wide spectrum of morphological variability.As part of a study to assess the biodiversity,taxonomy and potential for cultivation of species of Ganodermataceae,we discovered thirty species on different hosts belong to genus Ganoderma and Amaurodermaincluding Ganoderma wuzhishanensisas a new speciesand G.steyaertanumas a new record for this taxon from China.We identified G.applanatum,G.lingzhi,G.mastoporum,G.subrinosum and Amauroderma rugosumfor the first time in Thailand based on strong molecular evidence supported by multigene analyses and morphological observations.Furthermore,one new Amauroderma species was identified from the same surrounding region.Present study helpsto obtain local isolates that can be used in breeding improvement experiments for cultivation since its possible value in biotechnology.
