平均表征稳定性促进变异性知觉

视觉场景中多物体能够自动形成统计概要表征,而且平均表征能够作为一种稳定的背景性整体表征促进局部的物体知觉。本研究通过两个变异性比较任务来考察这种平均表征稳定性如何影响另一种整体表征(变异性知觉)。在实验的刺激材料由2张10*10方格图片组成,构成了两个灰度值集合。每个方格的颜色为不同深浅的灰色,每张图所有方格的灰度值随机取自特定平均值和标准差的正态分布。实验1采用同时呈现两个灰度方格图进行变异性大小比较的任务,操纵了平均表征稳定性和呈现时间两个因素研究平均表征稳定性效应的时间进程,实验2则采用两个灰度方格图相继呈现判断变异性是变大还是变小的任务,同时进一步将平均表征稳定性分解为不同水平。结果表明,稳定的平均表征能够促进变异性知觉。具体来说,平均表征稳定性促进效应主要体现在中等绩效条件(50-300ms),过短或过长的加工时间可能因地板或天花板效应而掩盖这种促进效应;这种稳定性促进效应是一种长时程而非短时效应,短时平均表征稳定性主要影响反应偏向。这些结果说明,变异性表征也可自动形成,但平均值和变异性两种整体表征之间可能存在共享的机制和注意资源的竞争,而稳定的平均表征可能通过减少注意资源竞争而促进变异性知觉。
Recent study suggested that statistical representations of ensemble objects may be formed automatically and serve as contextual stability to facilitate ongoing perception. The present study investigated whether such facilitation occurs in the extraction of variability information and how the stability of context mean values influences variability perception. We designed two tasks in which participants directly judge variability of the stimuli. In Experiment 1, we manipulated both the stability of mean values and the exposure time to observe the time course of stability facilitation. In Experiment 2, we dissected the stability of context mean values into between-trial or within-trial levels to further investigate the mechanism of such facilitation. Results revealed that stable mean contexts do facilitate variability perception. In particular, stable long-term mean context improves sensitivity to variability, but it is subject to the processing time of variability perception; and this sensitivity facilitation results mainly from the long-term stability, while response bias is determined by the interaction of both long-term and transient mean stability.
