Alexander Hamilton is a remarkable politician, economist and diplomat in thefoundation time of America, though never become the president, he might establishmore far-reaching and more lasting influence than the people who become thePresident of the United States. His brilliant ideas have never gone with his death, andstill have the distribution of more glory. As the chief architect of the political systemand economic president of the U.S, Hamilton took part in almost every field of thepolicy making of the nation. Especially in the field of diplomacy. His diplomaticthought and exercises have made huge influence on the diplomatic policy of America,he himself is one of the founders of the American diplomatic tradition. But in thehistory of America, he is not reflected until after his death on this kind of influenceand status. In China, the understanding about Hamilton have gone through a coursefrom more demote to the progressively objective too, and the study on Hamilton'sthought still remains to be overall. For this being insufficient, this article attempts toexpound the fact and hold in an all-round way about the diplomatic thought anddiplomatic exercises of Alexander Hamilton, thus correctly appraisal his position inAmerican history on this foundation. In this article, the complicated international anddomestic political environment is set as the background, and the author tried toexplore the origine, developement, exercise and influence of the diplomatic thought ofAlexander Hamilton in order to research and discuss his diplomatic thoughtcomprehensively and historically. The author hopes more people can be acquaint withthe diplomatic contribution of Alexander Hamilton and appraise his diplomaticcontribution correctly.Meanwhile, the author hopes this article can help more peopleunderstand the essence and characteristics of the diplomatic policy of America.
This article is divided into five parts. The first part of the article described Hamilton's life mainly. Through narrating his unusual adventure from a poor orphanto an outstanding founding father, the author tried to unfold the inner world of adelicate and emotional politician before the readers eyes, in the meanwhile lay thefoundation of the following parts. The second part concentrates on describing theformation background of Hamilton's diplomatic thoughts. The description is fromthree aspects: his childhood, which played an important role in forming his characterand thoughts; his service life, which set the tone of his official career and politicalguiding principle; and the complicated international and domestic politicalenvironment before the foundation of the U.S.A.. From the research on these threeaspects, the author tried to provide a deep and thorough description of the formationof Hamilton's diplomatic thoughts. The third part is about Alexander Hamilton'sdiplomatic thoughts which are quite abundant, original and deep. His diplomaticthoughts can be summarized and described as the following three points:hegemonismon political realism, expansionism on nationalism and selective isolationism. Thesethree points supplement each other as well as interact with each other. The fourth partconcentrates on describing Hamilton's diplomatic exercises. Alexander Hamilton'sdiplomatic exercises had simple and direct aim, that was to make the young nationgrow safely and become stronger in the complicated international diplomatic fieldwhere many predators are waiting. As the main planner and enforcer of the earlyAmerican diplomatic policy, Alexander Hamilton exercised his diplomatic thoughtswithin1789-1800, and his main diplomatic exercises included the reaction of theFrench Revolution, the publishment of the Declaration of Neutrality, the subscriptionof the Jay Treaty and the Quasi-war. In this part, there is a deep and comprehensivedescription about his diplomatic exercises which is presented in chronological order. The fifth part will evaluate Alexander Hamilton's diplomatic thoughts from twoaspects. One is how his diplomatic thoughts and diplomatic exercises played animportant role in the early diplomatic field. Another is how his diplomatic thoughtsand diplomatic exercises gave huge influence on the American diplomatic policy.
Through the research on his diplomatic thoughts and diplomatic exercises, theauthor drew the following conclusions: Alexander Hamilton is a remarkable politician, economist and diplomat in the early days of foundation of America. His diplomaticthoughts are quite abundant, original and deep. His diplomatic exercises helped theyoung nation a lot and make the young nation grow safely and become stronger in thecomplicated international diplomatic field where many predators are waiting.Alexander Hamilton's diplomatic thoughts and diplomatic exercises itself has becomea part of American diplomatic tradition.
