Thomas Hardy(1840-1928) was considered one of England's foremost nineteenth-century novelists. Because Hardy criticized the social customs of his own late-Victorian era and was groundbreaking in his criticism of what he saw as stifling aspects of the institution of marriage and conventional views of sexuality, he is enjoying a renewed appeal with today's readers and critics a century later. Far From the Madding Crowd, published in 1874, was one of the most popular novels by Thomas Hardy. It belongs to the group of Novels of Character and Environment. Nowadays, it is attracting more and more attention from readers and critics alike. English women in the nineteenth century are defined as obedient to men and resistant to sexuality, whereas the heroine Bathsheba in this novel is an independent, young and attractive woman who has a strong love for freedom and courage in the pursuit of love. The reason for her first refusal of Oak's proposal and later rejection of Boldwood's offer of proposal is that she doesn't love them. Her choice of Troy as marriage partner is out of her pursuit of true love and brave acknowledgement of her strong sexuality. Although Bathsheba's passionate and irrational nature leads her into serious errors of judgment, Hardy endows her with sufficient resilience, intelligence and good luck to overcome her youthful folly. As our society is becoming more open and tolerant, Hardy's construction of Bathsheba as such a vivid image of new woman is gaining more and more recognition. Her complex relationships with the three suitors-the honest and devoted shepherd Gabriel Oak, the rich but reserved farmer Boldwood and the handsome but unfaithful Sergeant Troy, have appealed greatly to readers in the new century. In Far From the Madding Crowd, Hardy explores the proper basis for a happy marriage. Although Bathsheba originally rejected Gabriel Oak, telling him she doesn't love him, he offers her true comradeship and turns out to be the right man to make her happy. To some extent, the novel embodies Hardy's outlook on marriage.
This thesis adopts feminist theory to interpret the reasons for Bathsheba's choice of marriage. It is divided into the following five parts. In the first part, I intend to give a brief introduction to Thomas Hardy and his Far From the Madding Crowd. The second chapter focuses on the literature review, including international and domestic studies of the novel and the heroine Bathsheba. In the third chapter, I will present a brief account of feminist theory. The fourth chapter offers a detailed textual analysis of Bathsheba's relationships with the three suitors and the reasons for her choices in the two marriages. The last part summarizes Bathsheba's choice between Gabriel Oak and Troy out of her own free will and brave pursuit of love and then concludes that Bathsheba is a vivid image of an independent and freedom-loving new woman.
