Isotopic Variations of Soil and Input Water Mixing

It is important to study isotopic variations in input water in soil system for water movement mechanism and hydrograph separation. Mechanisms causing isotopic variations and time for reaching isotopic balance between different soil water and input water are studied through soil water mixing experiments. Experimental results show that isotopic variation in mixing water is mainly caused by isotopic mixing between soil water and input water. It is rather difficult to observe the phenomenon of soil adsorbing isotopes of input water due to measurement errors of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes. The isotopes of soil water and input water reach balance between 0.5 and 1 hour after the beginning of soil water mixing experiments.
