     Xiacaowan was known as the fossil storehouse of Miocene. It was important to study the evolution and distribution of plants, mollusca and vertebrate. The different fossils found in the study area of Hongze Lake indicated the abundant biodiversity in Miocene. The transformation of fluvial-lacustrine strata to lacustrine strata and other geological activities brought the visible changes of the biodiversity in the study area.
