摘要
Based on the data obtained under the China-Korea joint project (1997~2001)and historicobservations, the distribution, transportation and sedimentation of sediment in the southem Yellow Sea(SYS) are discussed, and the controversial formation mechanism of muddy sediments is also ex-plored. The sediment transport trend analysis indicates that the net transport direction of sediment inthe central SYS (a fine-grained sediment deposited area) points to 123.4°E,35. l°N,which is apossible sedimentation center in the central SYS.The sediment transport pattern is verified by the dis-tribution of total suspended matter (TSM) concentration and particulate organic carbon (POC) δ13Cvalues,the latter indicates that the bottom water plays a more important role than the surface water intransporting the terrigenous material to the central deep-water area of the SYS,and the Yellow Sea cir-culation is an important control factor for determing the sediment transport pattern in the SYS.Thecarbon isotope signals of organic matter in sediments indicate that the Shandong subaqueous delta hashigh sedimentation rate and the deposited sediments originate mainly from the modern Yellow River. The terrigenous sediments in deep-water area of the SYS originate mainly from the old Yellow Riverand the modem Yellow River, and only a small portion of them originates from the modem YangtzeRiver. The analytical results of TSM and stable carbon isotopes are further confirmed by another inde-pendent tracer of sediment source, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).Five light mineral prov-inces in the SYS can be classified, and they are Ⅰ-north mineral province of the SYS covered with sed-iments dominantly from the Yellow River,Ⅱ-mixed mineral province covered with sediments from boththe Yellow River and Yangtze River, Ⅲ-middle mineral province overlaid with sediments mainly fromthe Yellow River and partly from the Yangtze River,Ⅳ-mineral province east of the Yangtze Rivermouth overlaid with sediments dominantly from the Yangtze River, and Ⅴ-southem mineral provmcewith mixed sediments of the relict sediment and modem Yangtze River material. The modem shelfsedimentary processes in the SYS are controlled by shelf dynamic factors. The muddy depositional sys-tems are produced in the shelf low-energy environments, which are controlled by some meso-scale cy-clonic eddies (cold eddies)in the central SYS and the area southwest of the Cheju Island. On thecontrary,an anticyclonic muddy depositional system (warm eddy sediment) appears in the southeastof the SYS ( the area northwest of the Cheju Island). In this study,we give the cyclonic and anticy-clonic eddy sedimentation patterns.
