Expert systems are valuable tools that, in general, try to simulate how an expert solves a specific problem. This is advantageous when there are no experienced people or as a decision support tool when it is the expert who is the user of the system. This article presents a new expert system, called the REX system, recently developed at the University of Costa Rica. Existing rock mass classification systems such as the RMR system (Rock Mass Rating) developed by Bieniawski (1993), the Q (Norwegian Geotechnical Institute Q) system originally published by Barton et al. (1974) and updated by Grimstad and Barton (1993), the SMR (Slope Mass Rating) system published by Romana (1993) and the Hoek and Brown failure criterion, as modified by Hoek and Brown (1997) have been included as components of the expert system.
