An earlier study [Tronvoll, J., Investigation of cavity failures for sand production prediction. Thesis, The Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim, 1993] has shown that an advanced numerical model may be applied to predict the onset of sand production during petroleum production, but they are unable to give quantitative volumetric estimates of sand production and post-failure behaviour of the rock. In the post-failure regime the fluid flow appears to be of importance for sand production initiating in the de-cohesioned rock and further evolution of the failure zone. This study was thus initiated to explicitly investigate the hydrodynamic effects of sand production.
