We demonstrate a four-qubit cluster state can be used to realize quantum dense coding in trapped ions. The scheme does not involve Bell-state measurement. Thus it is insensitive to the thermal motion, which is of importance in view of experiment. Meanwhile, the successful probability can both reach 1.0. The protocol is simple and easy to be fulfilled in the experiment. These property of the schemes can be utilized to construct a controlled quantum channel, which may be useful in the future quantum computation.
