The world is accelerating to enter the era of globalization, information technology. Thetrend of financial globalization is overwhelming. The links among the financial systems of thedifferent regions which compose the world financial system are close day by day. Thefinancial systems of different regions present significant differences and closely relate andinteract with other economic and social sub-part of their own region. The role of the financialsystem in the global economy is increasingly significant and important.
Based on the classic theories of regional economic geography and finance, thisdissertation argues the law of geographical development of the world financial system andadvances the theory of―the geographic hierarchies of financial system‖, the theory of―apicaldominance in the world economic and financial system‖and the theory of―the geographichierarchies of the global financial crisis contagion‖. The framework of―the geographichierarchies of financial system‖theory is built up in this dissertation. Then this dissertationsets this theory into the practice of China and finds that obvious geographic hierarchies existin the China’s financial system. According to this, the economic and financial developmentstrategy of China is proposed. It is a test of the theory and also an attempt that the theory isapplied in practice. This dissertation composes of6chapters except the introduction andconclusion.
Chapter Ⅰ, the Basic Theories of Regional Economic Geography and Finance. Based onthe literature review of the theories of regional economic geography and finance, the analysisand comments of these theories are given out.
Chapter Ⅱ, the Geographic Hierarchies of the World Financial System. A mathematicalmodel is built up by using13categories of index through the screening of tens of thousandsof data. The objective conclusion that geographic tires exists on the world financial system isdrawn by employing the methodology combined with quantitative and qualitative analysis. The world financial system is divided into four tires by the scientific method. Thecharacteristics of different tire are summarized and the influencing factors and rationale of theformation of geographic hierarchies of e world financial system are analyzed.
Chapter Ⅲ,"Financial Advantage" and "Apical dominance" in the Regional Division ofLabor. From a historical perspective, the phenomenon of "apical dominance" in thegeographical division of the world is summarized. It is argued that the "financial advantage"has become the "apical dominance" in today’s world economic integration tide. Furthermore, the mechanisms and practical meanings of "financial advantage" and "apical dominance" areillustrated.
Chapter Ⅳ,―the Geographic Hierarchies of the Global Financial Crisis and Contagion‖.the theories of economic crisis and financial crisis are reviewed briefly. The financial crisishas been taking the place of the industrial crisis to be the symbol of the economic cycle sincethe human society entered the era of knowledge economy. It is analyzed that the differentmechanisms of the financial crisis generating and developing on different hierarchies, as well as the features of geographic hierarchies of the global financial crisis contagion.
Chapter Ⅴ, China's Financial and Economic Development Strategy. As the country on thethe third hierarchy, financial development process of China is representative. China has a vastterritory, and the inner difference of financial development is significant. From the timedimension, cointegration analysis. A set of financial econometrics methods, including Grangercausality test, error correction model, impulse response analysis and variance decompositionanalysis, is complemented to analyze the relationships between financial development andindustrial structure evolution, between financial development and economic growth in China. From the space dimension, the China financial system is divided into3hierarchies. Theinfluencing factors and rationale of the formation of geographic hierarchies of China financialsystem and characteristics of each hierarchy are illustrated.
Chapter Ⅵ, China’s Financial and Economic Development Strategies. financial andeconomic development strategies of China are Proposed, based on the study on thegeographic tires of financial system. It includes that enhancing the strategic position offinance, improving the environment for financial development, making the regionaldevelopment strategy according to different tires.
The basic theories and conclusions presented in this dissertation:(1) the objectiveexistence of geographic hierarchies of the world financial system. There are4geographichierarchies in the world financial system, and each tire has its own scope and characteristics.(2) There is close positive correlation between the level of regional financial development andregional economic development level, human development level, and the level of informationtechnology development.(3) The high-hierarchy region occupies the "apical dominance" inthe world geographical division of labor, and "core-periphery" pattern of the world financialsystem will be strengthen in the future.(4) The causes and the development path of thefinancial crisis on different tire is different, and the global financial crisis contagion has thefigure of the geographic hierarchies (5) the relation between financial development and theevolution of industrial structure, economic growth in China is interaction and mutualpromotion.(6) Three hierarchies exist in financial system of China.(7)The strategy andmeasures of economic and social development is argued for China by exploiting the "apicaldominance" and―financial advantage‖, based on application of the theory of the geographichierarchies of financial system.
