摘要
The sedimentary system of carbonate from the South China Sea(SCS)is classified into 3patterns and examined respectively in the paper. The evolutionary history of both carbonate platform and pelagic ooze is particularly reviewed with the process of the SCS since the late Oligocene. It is pointed out that 3characteristic phases of the carbonate sedimentation occurred at the Late Oligocene,Miocene and from the end of the Miocene to the present.Among them, the middle Miocene, during which the SCS was arriving on its developing zenith,is a period that can provide tectonically and climatically the best base to the carbonate deposit.Starting from the late Miocene, the SCS met its strong regional subsidence and closer configuration, which resulted in evident decline of both the shallow water and pelagic carbonates.
