| | | The National Geological Library of China （NGLC）, also known as the Geosciences Documentation Center of China Geological Survey（CGS）, is a non-profit entity affiliated with CGS. The primary missions of NGLC involve the collection, processing and development of geosciences literature, carrying out related research and constructing the information system to provide geosciences literature and information services to the public. Currently, NGLC holds a collection of 710,000 volumes of books and documents published in China and overseas, over 10000 geological graphic documents from various countries in the world, and more than 20 large-scale bibliographic databases, covering the recent 200 years from the initiative period of modern geology to present day. It has established partnerships with nearly 400 geological institutions in more than 60 countries and regions for literature exchange and interlending. Besides known as the Geosciences Documentation Center of CGS, NGLC is also a standing council unit of Library Society of China, a council unit of China Society for Scientific and Technical Information（CSSTI）, and one of the first science popularization bases of land and resources.
The primary duties and functions include:
 To collect, collate and preserve geosciences literature published in China and overseas;
To process and disseminate domestic and international geosciences literature information, and to provide geosciences literature and information services to the public;
To research, develop and transform domestic and international geosciences literature information, and to establish a geosciences information exchange platform for real-time release of geoscience information;
To conduct research on library science, information processing technology and standardization, etc.;
To carry out research on the culture of Earth Sciences and science popularization of Earth Sciences and to disseminate the geoscience knowledge;
To establish partnerships, develop business exchange and cooperate with related industries and institutions at home and abroad;
To perform the functions of Geoscience Documentation Center; to construct a security system for geosciences literature resources of the affiliated institutions of CGS; and to provide professional guidance and related technical training on geosciences literature work for the affiliated institutions of CGS. |
