To study the tempo-spatial response of groundwater system to different water resources exploration and utilization patterns in northern cities where groundwater is overdrafted, groundwater numerical models under three schemes of concentrated exploitation, exploitation reduction step-by-step and joint operation of generalized surface water and groundwater were constructed. The variations of regional groundwater level and water balance were studied using numerical models. Comparing the simulated results of regional groundwater level and water balance with base-line one, it shows that the regional groundwater level rises slowly and the groundwater level in the centre of the well field drops greatly which can be up to
