The late Triassic Jiapila Formation stratum was occurred in the Leiwuqi region, eastern Tibet, extending in NW-SE strike in a linear zone. Jiapila Formation was divided into 3 lithologic units (1,2,3) from old to new by four sets of 1:50,000 regional geologiea] investigations in Leiwuqi County in the recent years. The lithologic unit combinations and fossils for the four sets of units were different, the first unit was mainly composed of a suit of purplish red sandy conglomerate, with characteristics of piedmont river gravel facies ; the second unit was a suit of gray sandstone interbedded with limestone, with characteristics of offshore calcium clastic-carbonate; the third unit was red clastic rocks, with features of onshore sandy shale facies. The division of Jiapila Formation stratum was helpful to the fundamental geology survey in eastern Tibet, to provide new information for the stratigraphic geological research in the study region.
