The Kunming Basin is a new generation faulted basin which is subjected to the control by the south-north active faults. In around the Kunming basin region, there are totally 8 main active faults. Field seismic geological surveys and fault slip observations indicate that stress field in the region of Kunming Basin has two major stages. In the first stage (from Late-Pliocene to Mid-Pleistocene), the tectonic stress field is characteristic of nearly E-W compression and nearly N-S extension. In the second stage(from late-Pleistocene to the present), the tectonic stress field is mainly characteristic of NNW-SSE compression and NEE-SWW extension. In this stress field, the nearly N-S faults in the region mainly show a lateral slip.
