Geology as science was born in the West, and introduced into China by the "Western learning spreading to the East". It lasted for 350 years for the first founding of western modern geosciences to establishing native theory and methods in China. The Geological Survey of China (GSC) ,found in 1913, is the first modern scientific research institution of China. Under the leadership of Hongzhao Zhang (H. T. Chang), Wenjiang Ding (V. K. Ting) , Wenhao Weng (W. H. Wong) and others, GSC got distinguished achievements: opening Chinese geology, cultivating a large number of early geologists who soon became famous in the world. GSC made great successes not only in geology, but also in paleontology, geography, seismology, agrology, archaeology, paleo-anthropology, fuels and cartography, etc.
