Palynology has played a major role in resolving biostratigraphic issues. For example, the age of the “Upper Sinian Doushantuo Formation” of the drill core Su-Tai 103, the “Lower Jurassic Xiangshan Group” of the drill core Du 4, the “Gecun Formation” of the drill core Ge 9 has been constrained by microfossils, and incorrect biostratigraphic assignment of these units has been rectified. In the drill core Cao 9, fossil pollens have been used to determine that the drill core reached the Pukou Formation and that the hydrocarbon target reservoir was either passed or absent. The drilling was thus stopped at 473.03 m to save cost.
