A Review of Research Methodologies of Groundwater Dependent Terrestrial Vegetations

详细信息
摘要
This paper reviews research methodologies for quantifying and modeling of vegetation dependency on groundwater attributes. The ratio of groundwater uptake to total evapotranspiration rate is used as a criterion to measure the degree of dependency. This ratio shows regional and temporal variations and depends on vegetation types, groundwater level depth and variation, soil characteristics and climate. The total evapotranspiration rate can be measured by eddy-correlation method. Groundwater transpiration rate can be measured with sap flow sensors, or estimated from groundwater level diurnal variations. The mixing model of isotopes can be used to determine the ratios of various water sources used by vegetation. The responses of vegetation to decreasing groundwater levels could be proportional response or threshold response. Long-term systematic monitoring of groundwater levels and vegetation health may be able to establish the response function.
