M ajor processes con trollin g the existen ce of a large in tercon tin ental glaciation system w ere identified on the basis of glaciological，m eteorological，actinom etric，
geoch em ical and is ot opean alyses，as well as field observations and statistical analyses．Field experiments included meteoro logical conditions，components of radiation and heat balance，
accumulation and ablation during different types of weather and at diferent levels (accum ulationarea，firn bound ary and ablation zone)．We delineatedice—form ation zones and deve·l oped am ethod for estim ating water exchange in the system ，with the possibility for short and
long-term forecasting of its components．
