Txis book is offered to the large class of people who have never picked up any systematic knowledge of geology, and
who are interested, whether as landowners, shareholders, prospectors, engineers, builders, miners, farmers, or perhaps
just as lookers-on, in one or other of the many undertakings that depend for their success on the applications of geology
I meet many of these people, and I know that although they may deplore their ignorance of geology, they seldom take
any active steps to cure it, because that means much reading of large volumes which too often do not tell them what they
most wanted to know.
