WHEN, as in the present case, the preparation of a book has extended over a number of years and help has been sought and received from many quarters, it be-comes practically impossible to make proper acknowledgment to all those to whom credit is due. But this volume would be incormplete without some expression of gratitude to the administrative authorities of Columbia University who have so generously supported my geomorphic researches.
