THE situation in which we find ourselves with respect to petroleum is no occasion for alarm, but there is much reason for serious concern. It has so happened that a marked decrease in our rate of finding new oil, beginning in 1937, and continuing to grow worse and the fact that we cannot produce oil from our reserves at any rate we please, makes certain that from now on we shall be more and more depend-ent upon imported oil produced in foreign fields to make up our domestic deficiences.
