摘要
Many of the world’s pressing economic and social problems originate partly at least in the differences in environment and natural resources over the regions of the earth. A clear understanding of the physical environment, therefore, immeasurably enriches the study of economic, social, and political problems. For the American student particularly, because of the striking differences in natural endowment among different parts of the United States, an intelligent consideration of many national problems presumes a knowledge of the contrasts in climate, land surface, soils, minerals, and other resources between East and West, between North and South.
