The construction of Section 7 of the Tren Urbano in Río Piedras includes two underground stations, the Rio Piedras and the UPR Station. To connect the stations, two circular parallel tunnels were constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM). The length of each tunnel is 433.2 m and each one have an inside diameter of 5.8 m. The tunnels were excavated through alluvial deposits belonging to the Hato Rey Formation that consists mainly of silty clays, sandy clays and sands.;Since the tunneling activities took place beneath a commercial and residential zone, a geotechnical monitoring program was implemented to protect the structures. Monitoring data was compiled, summarized and analyzed in an attempt to relate the ground displacements with the construction activities. Also a comparison of the actual settlement with the predicted settlement was made.;One tendency observed from the gathered data was a small amount of movement generated ahead of the machine location. However, most of the settlements occurred immediately behind the location of the EPBM. Also the data demonstrates that surface settlement decrease in magnitude moving away from the center line between tunnels. Actual settlements were higher than predicted. Surface settlement has a clear effect in the structures, but no structural damage was reported. Application of the consolidation and compensation grout program proved to be successful in reducing the settlements of the overlying structures.
