A 9,10-dialkoxy-substituted anthracene linker has been designed and synthesized and used as a light-responsive platform to deliver siRNA. The histidine-substituted linker self-assembled in the presence of RNA forming a smart and biocompatible delivery capsule. This process is mediated by singlet oxygen, which cleaves the dialkoxyanthracene linker leading to the knocking down of Bcl-2 gene expression with up to 90% in live cells.
