High power diode laser systems are widely spread in the industry. Whereas systems with several hundred watts are used for plastic welding and soldering, mainly in automotive, medical device and consumer applications, kW-class diode lasers systems are used in metal processing applications to a large extent. Some direct beam applications use beam shaping to facilitate hardening of knife edges in industrial applications. The majority of applications take advantage fiber-coupled solutions, of in robotic applications for example. Here, we describe the concept from chip level, via automated beam shaping, up to fully integrated, fiber-coupled, kW-class, turn-key diode laser systems.
