No passivation process is required to generate spatially regulated biosurfaces. As Bong Soo Lee and co-workers show in their work featured on the front cover, patterns of proteins and cells are efficiently generated without employing a passivation process on the intrinsically activated, non-biofouling copolymer-coated gold surface, which was synthesized by surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer–atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP) with 2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride (AMA) and oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (OEGMA).
