Although fluorinated organic compounds are virtually nonexistent in nature, around 25 % of the
drugs on the market contain one or more fluorine atoms, the proportion of fluorinated derivatives among agrochemicals (antifungal agents, insecticides and herbicides) being even higher. This work describes a substrate-directed method for fluorination of some highly functionalized cyclopentane derivatives. The cyclic products incorporating CH
2F or CHF
2 moieties in their structure have been synthesized from
diexo- or
