On page 3973, J. Xie, B. Shen, and co-workers demonstrate the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticles as templates for synthesis of Gd@C-dots. Gd-complexes can be loaded into the pores of silica particles, forming Gd@C-dots under calcination; however, growth is limited by the silica cavity dimensions, producing particles of narrow size distribution. Gd@C-dots of excellent optical and magnetic properties can be prepared using this approach.
