Ag2+ is a powerful oxidizer capable of oxidizing even O
2 in certain conditions. This cation has previously been thought to be incompatible
with
water, and the synthesis of Ag
2+ compounds has previously been conducted in anhydrous environments. Ho
wever,
water molecules may in fact be attached to the voracious Ag
2+ cation
without decomposition, as sho
wn by the formation and properties of the complex salt [Ag(OH
2)
2][Ag(SO
4)
