On page 3118, a new hybrid structure consisting of a cytotoxic 1.4 nm sized gold core surrounded by a fluorophore-containing ligand shell is designed to monitor cellular uptake by Ulrich Simon and co-workers. The evolution of fluorescence upon cellular uptake discloses that the loss of the ligand shell or of parts of is the essential to unfold high AuNP cytotoxicity.
