The first examples of bio-inspired white hybrid light-emitting diodes (Bio-WHLED) with a micropatterned rubber-like down-converting coating were realized using a 3D printing technique. As presented by A. R. Boccaccini, R. D. Costa, and co-workers on page 1601792, both the mechanical properties of the rubber matrix and the excellent luminescent features of the proteins lead to devices with enhanced luminous efficiency and color quality.
