Polycrystalline samples of Ba<sub>5sub>Fe<sub>6+xsub>S<sub>4+xsub>O<sub>8sub> (x = 0.44&mdash;0.55) are prepared by solid state reaction of stoichiometric amounts of BaO, Fe<sub>2sub>O<sub>3sub> and S (Al<sub>2sub>O<sub>3sub> crucible in evacuated silica tubes, 800 °C, 70 h).
