This paper presents a design of Smith predictor (SP) for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) chemical process with multiple time delays based on a fuzzy decoupling scheme. The decoupling control is achieved using fuzzy logic, to reduce the reliance on model-based analysis in comparison with conventional decoupling. The proposed scheme is easy to realize and simple to design, as well as having a good decoupling capability. The SP is added to the system to overcome the problem of time delay. Stability conditions of the overall closed loop system based on a PI controller in the presence of a fuzzy decoupling scheme are formulated. The Wood and Berry model of a binary distillation column and an industrial-scale polymerization reactor model are used as two examples to illustrate the applicability of the proposed scheme.
