Reliable on-chip quantum optics requires a controlled positioning of single-photon sources. On page 7101, R. Bratschitsch and co-workers intentionally create single-photon emitters in monolayer WSe2 on the nanoscale. The specific strain landscape induced in the monolayer by two single-crystalline gold nanorods leads to the formation of a localized potential well inside the gap. The image shows an artistic impression of an atomically thin semiconductor folding around gapped gold nanorods with a single-photon emitter in the gap.
