An electrochemical self-templating strategy for the synthesis of hollow hierarchical Co₃O₄ microtube arrays with well-defined internal cavities and porous shells is described by S. Z. Qiao and co-workers in their Communication on page 1324 ff. These structural features facilitate mass transfer and lead to excellent electrocatalytic activity in oxygen and hydrogen evolution as well as in overall water splitting.
