A rationale modification of m-benziporphyrin by inner carbon methylation is crucial for the effective conversion of meta-phenylene to cyclopentadiene, a highly efficient contraction. The remarkable and facile gold(III)-mediated transformation of 22-methyl-meta-benziporphyrin to gold(III) 2-methyl-21-carbaporphyrins is reported.
