The cartoon figure is Bajie a character in the Chinese story Journey To The West. In their Communication on page 6438 ff., D. Kim, J. Song, and co-workers describe the synthesis of β,β-tripyrrin bridged “earring” porphyrinoids, whose shape is similar to Bajie's head and ears. These porphyrinoids, which exhibit near-infrared absorption, possess multiple cavities that can complex up to three metal ions (the red badge of Hunan Normal University represents the complexed metal ion in the central cavity).
