The way of binding guest building blocks in the cavity of large star-shaped mesogens significantly influences the stability of columnar liquid crystal phases. The clearing temperatures can be tuned from low temperature for guests with no specific supramolecular interaction with the host (left) to high temperatures for pseudo guests, which are covalently linked to the host (right).
