The Cu-catalyzed reaction of ortho-alkenyl substituted phenyl carbodiimides (I) with isocyanoacetate (II) initially proceeds through a [3 + 2] cycloaddition followed by an intramolecular conjugate addition annulation to give the title compounds (III) in moderate to good yields.
