C57BL/6J and C57BL/6N sub-strains differ in their response to brain hypoxia-ischemia.

Lesion size, microglia activation and apoptosis were reduced in C57BL/6J mice.

In contrast, ROS-induced DNA damage was increased compared to C57BL/6N mice.

Metabolic and genetic differences between strains might account for this diversity.
