The paper presents fatigue test results of a welded I beam under a compression line loading. The tests show that in most cases cracks initiate from one side and grow up to about 50 to 60% of the web thickness and then stop. In some cases they grow from both sides. The test results suggest that EN 1993-1-9 and EN 1993-6 for crane runway girders may be too conservative.
