Berberine increases the expression and membrane translocation of CD36 in hepatocytes. The increase of CD36 results in enhanced fatty acid uptake and lipid accumulation. Berberine-induced fatty liver is mediated by AMPK-ERK-C/EBPβ pathway. CD36-specific shRNA inhibited berberine-induced lipid accumulation in liver.
